What is evaporative cooling?
Evaporative cooling is natures’ most efficient way of cooling – through the evaporation of water! Evaporative coolers do exactly that, they cool by drawing warm or hot air through wet pads using a fan blower.
Evaporative cooling is becoming more and more popular in Melbourne as it is best suited to warm, dry climates without intense humidity.
It also gives the feeling of bringing the outdoors in, by allowing open doors and windows while the air-conditioning is running
(In fact – this is essential!)
Australian studies have shown that even large evaporative coolers usually cost between 5 and 10 cents per hour to run. So, on a hot Melbourne day, it can cost under $1 to run an evaporative cooler for the whole day!

Ducted Cooling Service & Repairs
Ducted Cooling is generally considered the ultimate in Refrigerated Air-Conditioning.
Refrigerated cooling systems are exactly what their name implies – they act as a ‘refrigerator’ for your house, allowing you to set any temperature you desire. Harley Plumbing can supply and install Daikin, Actron, Bonaire and Lennox refrigerated cooling systems, among others.
So, how does Ducted Cooling work?
Refrigerated cooling units contain indoor and outdoor coils connected by a pipe carrying a refrigerant gas. Warm indoor air is drawn over the internal coil, where heat in the air is absorbed by the refrigerant gas and carried to the outdoor coil. The heat is then dispersed outside, while the air blown back into the room is cooled.
Another benefit of refrigerated air conditioning is that it dehumidifies the air; when it passes over the cold internal coil, moisture from the warm indoor air condenses and is drained away. Many of these units also contain a filter. As such, a refrigerated air conditioning unit takes air from your home then cools, dehumidifies and filters it before feeding it back through strategically-placed ducts around your home. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?
Zone Control
For energy efficiency and to ensure the maximum comfort of all household members, zoning control can be installed on refrigerated air conditioning. Zone control allows you to set different temperatures in every room of your home or office. You may choose not to cool rooms which are vacant, again saving on energy. A room with more people in it or a kitchen at dinner time may require a lower temperature setting than a bedroom at night time. With zone control, this can be achieved with certain models.
Considerations
In assessing whether refrigerated air conditioning is right for you, you need to consider:
- Humidity – while some types of air conditioning are affected by humidity, these systems are not. In fact, it actually dehumidifies the air
- Noise – main cooling unit should be located outdoors on ground not on roof
- Versatility – you could also benefit from installing ducted heating at the same time
- Temperature – while other types of air conditioning are limited in the range of temperatures they can provide, refrigerated cooling can keep you comfortable regardless of the outside temperature.

An undersized unit may have to work harder to produce the desired temperature, burning more energy and wearing itself out. An over-sized unit may also unnecessarily increase your energy bill.
Split System Service & Repairs
A “SPLIT SYSTEM” literally splits the mechanicals of your air-conditioner into two sections. The “inside” unit which houses a coil and very quiet fan is mounted inside your room (on any wall high or low to suit your furniture layout) and the outside unit which houses all the main components is located externally and interconnected with small copper tubes to the indoor section. This system allows more choice of position when locating the unit seen in your room and because most of the mechanicals are remote it is extremely quiet when operating.
These systems combine power with whisper-quiet operation and the remote control allows for simple and effective usage.
